Performance: agglomeration of iron ore fines
Demonstration conducted at SWERIM in Sweden.¹ The binding properties of a Borregaard lignosulfonate and two synthetic binders were tested on iron ore fines (particle size <0.063 mm). Borregaard's lignosulfonate exhibited the highest STS after 96 hours and demonstrated the fastest strength development.
Cylindrical briquettes were produced using a hydraulic piston press (Herzog). A total of 20 g of fines was loaded into the mold (diameter = 20 mm) for each pass, with the binding agents dosed at 1 wt.% of the total weight (20 g).
Briquettes were tested for Splitting Tensile Strength (STS) in accordance with the ISO 4700:2007 standard, using a hydraulic compression testing machine. Strength was measured immediately, and 24 and 96 hours after compaction.
Key takeaways:
- All binders improved briquette strength
- Strength development took time as binders hydrated
- Borregaard's lignosulfonate exhibited the highest STS after 96 hours and demonstrated
the fastest strength development
