Stronger Board, lower cost, Faster run:

Natural performance booster for Corrugated Board Glues

Exilva is Borregaard’s innovative bio-based performance backbone for corrugated board glues. It strengthens bonds, improves glue stability and enables faster production – helping you reduce glue and energy consumption while producing flatter, stronger board with less waste.

Why it matters

In modern corrugating operations, producers must continuously optimize glue performance, reduce waste, and increase speed – whether dealing with demanding substrates like coated paper, heavy kraft, ultra-light liners, and SC fluting, or standard recycled and lower-grade papers. Exilva is added directly in the glue kitchen, delivering technical advantages that translate into clear commercial value.

Key benefits:

  • Improve bond quality and strength: Achieve stronger ECT and consistent bonding across all paper grades.
  • Run faster and reduce waste: Higher bond strength means higher corrugator speeds, less warp, fewer delaminations and flatter board.
  • Lower glue and energy costs: Use less adhesive and reduce steam consumption thanks to faster bonding and drying.
  • Better glue stability: Controls viscosity drift and penetration for consistent glue performance.
  • Supports sustainability goals: Fully bio-based and enables boron-free operation; safer in use than synthetic alternatives.
  • Versatile and easy to integrate: Works with all board qualities, processes and recipes — from kitchen prep to final box.
Industrial trials and commercial production have shown up to +63% corrugator speed on heavy grades, -25% glue use, -12% steam energy, and -5% warp-related waste — with full native starch compatibility.

Customer stories and results

By using Exilva on both Single Facer and Double Backer, with native corn, one corrugator experienced a reduced glue consumption of 20%. Steam consumption was also reduced by 8% and downtime in converting was reduced by 20% due to much less post-warp and improved bonding.
— Plant 1, Native corn, EU
This corrugator has reported a 13% glue reduction on their Double Backer production. Due to improved bonding, they also achieved a 33% speed increase on their heavy liners (469 g/m2). Borregaard continues to work with this corrugator to further improve these results.
— Plant 2, Native corn, APAC
With Exilva in their Double Backer native wheat based glue, glue consumption was reduced by 13% and they improved their bonding.
